Let's Play ball
Rube and William Foster wanted to improve the lives of African-Americans through the sport of baseball. The Fosters’ Legacy Foundation will work in underserved communities to increase the popularity of the sport of baseball by supporting local youth baseball leagues and organizations with equipment and resources they need to ensure that every child that wants to participate in the sport will have the means to do so. The FLF will also conduct seminars and workshops to educate our youth on the sport of baseball.
We have partnered with *Earnest Horton..AKA...The Coach E of Guru *who has worked for over 13 years coaching and giving back to the youth of Chicago. He also is a Youth Development Instructor with the Chicago White Sox Amateur City Elite (ACE) program which provides a pathway to the game of baseball for more than 150 youth annually, while offering educational and mentorship programming aimed at pulling kids away front he dangers and potentially fatal distractions of Chicago's violent neighborhoods. Chicago High School Baseball Classic - Chicago
On April 12th, in partnership with Black Baseball Media, the Fosters Legacy Foundation (FLF) sponsored the High School Baseball Classic in Chicago. This was dubbed the Super Bowl of High School Baseball. Six prominent high schools took the field in a tournament-style day of baseball at the historic Ozinga baseball field in Crestwood, IL.
In our efforts to increase the popularity of baseball in the black community, this event was a great success. Over 400 people attended the event, including the mayor of Chicago. Acknowledging the significant role Rube Foster played in the sport of baseball in Chicago, the MVP of the final and biggest game was given the Rube Foster MVP award. This gave the FLF the opportunity to educate those attending on the significance of negro league baseball and why we must work to ensure black youth have the resources to participate in the sport.
